Library Media Center

The essential intent of the School District of the Chathams is to discover and grow the gifts within each child. The library/media program accomplishes this intent by fostering a love of reading and developing information literacy skills which will enable our students to think critically and become ethical and responsible members of society.

LIBRARY HOURS

The library is open until 3:30 p.m.

ABOUT OUR LIBRARY

Students are encouraged to visit the library for borrowing, research, reading projects, and video projects such as the morning announcements.  The students at Lafayette participate in a reading incentive program called Reading Road Trip where children are asked to connect to books using their talents in art, writing, technology, and drama.

Classes attend library lessons on the 6 day rotation schedule and teachers may use the open blocks for research.

Classes each week include browsing time, book clubs selection, digital citizenship lessons, reading and technology projects.

The LMC also houses the PTO sponsored fall Book Fair and One School, One Book/Author's Day.

One School, One Book

What is One School, One Book?

  • This school-wide event is where students and their families take 10 to 30 minutes a day to read aloud together.

  • Our students are captivated when their teachers read to them in school.

  • This age group continues to benefit from read alouds.

  • Studies show that reading to children helps them to listen better and longer, to build bigger vocabularies, to understand concepts better, to feel positive about both books and learning.

  • During homeroom, students will "turn and talk"  about the book.

  • They use Flip to share ideas and make connections!

  • Students enter a raffle for chances to take home items from the story and write or draw in journals.

  • Special projects are also a way for students and families to connect to their book.
